Technically, ‘protein supplements’ as a term is pretty generic, and pretty useless if you really want to achieve your goals. Most people aren’t fully aware of the very different types of protein, let alone the different types of protein supplements available. Understanding the special properties of each protein supplement will enable you to understand what you need, so you get the results you desire and aren’t left with nothing to show for your effort and money.
It all starts here. Many proteins aren’t complete proteins. That means they lack any number or combination of essential amino acids. Complete proteins, on the other hand, contain all essential amino acids, and are known as the best types of protein for growing muscle.
We could talk for hours about the merits of going with complete proteins as opposed to incomplete proteins, but it’s not necessary. Go with what works the best and you’ll get the best results. That’s why it’s highly recommended that you stick to protein supplements that are complete. The two most popular complete protein supplements are whey protein and casein supplements.
But, it’s less a choice of one or the other – as both are very different and can be used together for even better results.
Both whey protein supplements and casein supplements are complete proteins, and have a very high biological value – how ‘useable’ they are. Where they truly differ is whey protein has a lightening fast absorption rate, making it ideal for breakfast and post workout meals, and casein protein has a very slow absorption rate, making it ideal for taking during periods of fasting – such as a day when you are likely to skip meals for whatever reason, and most commonly, before bed.
Sure. As mentioned, there are numerous other complete protein and incomplete protein supplements available – such as soy, hemp, egg, etc. And beyond that, there are uncountable ‘mixes’ and ‘hybrid’ supplements which are often marketed as recovery supplements or carbohydrate supplements which may also contain whey, casein and other proteins as part of their ingredients.
