Whey protein itself may well be the best source of protein on the planet, but, whether you opt for a natural whey protein or a more man made variety is a choice you will eventually have to make. The line between what constitutes natural whey protein and what doesn’t is quite blurry, and subject to each individuals interpretation. Here you will be given some things to consider – probably some things you’ve never considered or thought of before – so you get the best whey you can, with the most natural make up.
Let’s cut to the chase: natural whey protein is a term which tends to mean whey that doesn’t contain unnatural flavorings, colorings, preservatives or other unnatural ingredients. At least that’s what it means to most people.
Another interpretation less-considered is the origins of the milk from which the whey is derived. Real purists may like to know whether or not the cows were injected with hormones (a common practice) and what the cows were fed on. A brand like Jay Robb whey protein tends to trumpet the fact their natural whey protein is from cows which are fed on grass and not injected with hormones, and, their colorings, flavorings and all ingredients are natural.
Also, all whey protein supplements have been refined and filtered – that’s how they become concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate and contain a good amount of protein per serving. But, how they are filtered can make a difference between what amino acids and peptides are still contained and how denatured they are. Cold filtered whey protein tends to preserve all the goodness of whey protein without denaturing it.
Figuring out whether a particular brand is a natural whey protein or not depends on your definition of natural. As already stated, being natural is definitely something to be proud of and shout about, so companies which have a good deal of natural processing tend to be very vocal about it. Others may require a bit more research and you may even need to contact the company to find out more in depth information.
