Low Calorie Whey Protein
On this page I’ll point you to some of the finest examples of low calorie whey protein supplements available and also, if you’re interested, give information you may not be fully aware of regarding the different nutrient mixes of protein supplements and how they impact upon total calories per serving. Also, I’ll give you some possible workarounds. Hopefully all of the information given here will help you to make better choices in your supplements right away.
First, it’s very important you understand the following…
Calories come from 3 different nutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
- Proteins have 4 calories per gram serving.
- Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram serving.
- Fats have 9 calories per gram serving.
With this in mind, a 30g serving of a protein supplement could have any mix of protein and carbs (e.g. 29g of protein and 1g of carbs, or 25g of protein and 5g of carbs) and still be the same number of calories – 120 calories.
Fats, on the other hand, are where the caloric difference is. Consider a 30g protein supplement serving containing 29g of protein and 1g of fat, that’d be 125 calories. By comparison a serving containing 25g of protein and 5g of fat would be 145 calories – quite a difference.
Therefore, per equal serving size, the protein with the lowest fat count is the lowest calorie whey protein irrespective of the carbs/protein split.
If calories are your biggest concern, the ones with the lowest fat per equal serving are what you should go for.
An alternative:
It’s inevitably the case that the higher the protein purity of your supplement the higher the cost – but there may well be an alternative workaround for those on a limited budget. You could alter your food diet to accommodate the fat in a cheaper whey protein supplement so you are still taking in the same amount of fat/calories each day whilst using the supplement. It’s worth thinking about, anyway.
Examples of low calorie whey protein supplements:
Two protein supplements which contain zero fats (yes, no fat at all – thus are as low calorie as is nutritionally possible) are VPX Zero Carb SRO which as the name suggests contains zero carbs, too, thus is 100% pure whey protein. Also, Universal Ultra ISO Whey which contains zero fat and less than 1g of carbs per 25g serving.
