There are hundreds, if not thousands of protein supplements, and opinions on which are the best protein supplements are even greater in number. It can make choosing a protein supplement confusing. Opinions may be thousand fold, and everyone has their own beliefs and favorites, but, the basics are the basics, and the best protein supplements, as you will soon discover, all share the basics in common, and that’s precisely what we will delve into here.
Different protein supplements have different uses, and are made using different techniques. However, one universal rule of thumb which stands for all is this: the best protein supplements are those which have the highest concentration of protein.
Price will usually reflect quality, but, purity can easily be calculated by dividing the protein content by the serving size.
It’s easy to think that every scoop of your supplement is pure protein, but that’s seldom the case. True, some of the very best protein supplements are so high in purity that may be the case near enough, but mostly, they will contain other ingredients, too – either naturally occurring from the protein source, or, added as a way to ‘cut’ the purity and make it go further.
Also, the best sources of protein are those which have all essential amino acids – i.e. complete proteins. Therefore, the best protein supplements are those which contain all amino acids also. Such complete protein supplements are casein, egg and whey.
Casein proteins are slow releasing proteins and are ideal to be taken before bed to keep you in nutrition while you sleep, or to keep you going for long periods when you can’t eat. Egg, as I’m sure you know, is the second best protein source one – second only to whey – and are ideal to be taken anytime. Whey is a fast acting protein supplement with the highest biological value of all protein, making it ideal to give your muscles all the ideal nutrients they need after training or in the morning, as quickly as possible.
Those supplements, then, are your options, and they can be used as part of the same supplementation regime. Just remember, the best protein supplements are to give you a little bit extra or something different, and while they can play a big part of your diet, they should never completely or overwhelmingly replace nutrition from real whole foods.
